Knowledge is Power

by | Jan 30, 2024

I vividly remember the first time I encountered the phrase “Knowledge is Power.” It was during a college class, and my professor, in the midst of a compelling story, concluded with this groundbreaking statement. Struck by its profoundness, I took it to heart, writing it on sticky notes and placing them everywhere to remind myself to cultivate a love for learning. After all, who doesn’t want to be powerful?

Years later, I had the privilege of attending a conference where the legendary Les Brown was a speaker. An avid fan of his wisdom, I eagerly absorbed every word. Les, known for his engaging style, posed a thought-provoking question: “If knowledge is power, where would the richest place on earth be?” The audience, filled with anticipation, offered various answers, ranging from China to Dubai and even America.

However, Les Brown challenged the conventional notion and revealed a profound truth: the richest place on earth is the graveyard. In those solemn grounds lie unwritten books, unsung songs, and unread poems—a repository of untapped knowledge.

This revelation shook me to my core. It made me question the validity of the popular saying “knowledge is power” in our generation. We live in an era where information is at our fingertips, accessible within seconds from the device in our pocket. Yet, if knowledge were truly synonymous with power, why do so many struggle to achieve their goals?

The answer, as Les eloquently put it, lies in the equation: Knowledge plus action equals power. It’s not enough to accumulate information; one must act upon it. We all know intellectually gifted individuals who once held the title of valedictorian or “most likely to succeed” but are not living up to their potential.

The truth is, there’s no magic formula for success, no shortcut to achieving dreams. It requires hard work, dedication, and a willingness to take action. Waiting for the perfect time or having everything figured out is a trap that hinders progress. The key lies in taking that first step, no matter how small, toward your goals.

So, whatever your aspirations may be, consider this your sign to get started. Success is not a given; it’s earned through effort and action. Embrace the process, and remember, the real power comes not just from what you know but from what you do with that knowledge.
