Today, I’m diving into a topic that might stir up some strong opinions: SMART Goals don’t work. Yes, I said it. Now, before you grab your pitchforks, hear me out. Have you ever found yourself unable to achieve a goal, despite setting it with all the specificity, measurability, achievability, relevance, and time-bound criteria? You’re not alone. The popular advice from personal development conferences and self-help books often revolves around the mantra of “Set a SMART Goal.” While I appreciate the SMART Goal model and use it with my clients, the issue is the oversimplification that achieving goals is a guaranteed outcome by merely setting them with these criteria. Let’s face it; success doesn’t work like magic.

The prevalence of SMART Goals in today’s society can be attributed to their simplicity. We live in a world that craves shortcuts, hacks, and silver bullets. Unfortunately, the reality is that such quick fixes don’t exist when it comes to success. There’s no shortcut to achieving your goals, but there is a process. Setting a SMART Goal is a valuable part of that process, but it’s just a piece of the puzzle—a small yet important piece, not the entire picture.

The allure of a straightforward approach might make the SMART Goal model appealing, but it’s crucial to recognize that it is not the end all cure all. While SMART Goals provide a structured starting point, they should be seen as a guide rather than a guarantee.
