Grandpa Wisdom for Business

by | Sep 26, 2024

Have you ever had someone in your life who just seemed to have that timeless, “old-school” wisdom? Someone, often an elder, who would share short stories or memorable quotes, always packed with a life lesson? Those nuggets of wisdom tend to stick with us and shape who we are.

For me, that person was my grandpa. His advice helped mold me into the person I am today, and I’d love to share a few of his sayings that still resonate with me. I believe they might speak to you too!

“If You’re 5 Minutes Early, You’re 10 Minutes Late”

This was one of my grandpa’s favorites, and it explains why I’m always one of the first to show up at an event. He taught me to expect the unexpected. In my line of work, being on time isn’t just about punctuality—people are counting on me to be ready when the spotlight is on.

I remember once when a snowstorm was forecasted, and I had a speaking engagement five hours away. The weatherman advised everyone to stay off the roads. Instead of risking it, I left three days early and stayed in a hotel close to the venue. Sure enough, the event was canceled due to the weather, but when I told them I was already there, they couldn’t believe it. That commitment earned me countless referrals from the organization simply because I was prepared.

“Treat People Like You’re the Host of the Party”

This is another gem. Whenever you’re out, whether at a party, church, or even the store, act like you’re the host. It’s your job to make others feel welcome and help where you can.

Last year in Boston, I noticed an elderly man struggling with his luggage as I was checking in at a hotel. Naturally, I helped him out. Before I knew it, I was assisting several people with their bags. The next day, when they found out I was the keynote speaker, their reactions were priceless! It’s not about the title or position you hold; it’s about serving others, no matter the situation.

“The Only Currency We Spend Without Knowing the Balance is Time”

I often share this lesson when discussing goal achievement, but it applies to life in general. Most people live like they have all the time in the world, but the truth is, none of us know how much time we have left. That’s why it’s important to tell people you love them, reconnect with old friends, and make lasting memories. In the end, when we’re down to our last moments, those memories will be all we have.

“God Gave Us Two Ears and One Mouth”

This simple saying carries a lot of weight. Grandpa always emphasized that you can’t learn anything if you’re the one doing all the talking. One of the best things you can do, whether you’re in sales or just trying to connect with someone, is to listen more than you speak. And don’t just listen to respond—listen to truly understand. People love to talk about themselves, so let them. By being an attentive listener, you’ll leave an impression as the most fascinating person they’ve ever met.

Conclusion

Grandpa’s wisdom has stuck with me throughout the years, and it continues to guide me both personally and professionally. His lessons were simple, but the impact they had on how I approach life is profound. Whether it’s showing up early, treating people with kindness, making the most of our time, or simply listening more than we speak, these principles create a strong foundation for living a meaningful life. So, take a moment to reflect—who has shared timeless wisdom with you, and how can you apply it today?
